Nelson Cruz Would Like to Remind You That He’s the Mother F-ing Boomstick

Three. Home. Runs.

Nelson Cruz is 39. He was facing an All-Star pitcher last night, and hit three shots over 430 feet each in his first three at-bats (one was hit almost 480). He’s got seven homers in his last 7 games. He’s just the 10th player in MLB history to have a 3-dinger game after age 39 (and he’s never done it before). So, how does he still do it after 15 years in the bigs? After blasting HR numbers 23, 24, and 25 last night, here’s what he said:

“I needed a nap today,” he said. “I was dying for a nap.”

But as reporters joked that the three-homer game might start a new routine, Cruz immediately shot down that idea.

“No, I need my naps.”

You guys, I needed a nap just watching him do it. And he wasn’t joking – dude loves his naps, and has talked about it for ages.

Old Man Boomstick is on fire, and it’s bound to spark some questions:

Whatever the reason, Cruz is leaving very little doubt that he’s still got what it takes to be one of the most feared hitters in the majors. Many people questioned whether the Twins were being a bit stupid optimistic when they signed an old (for baseball) man – he’s older than his manager, Rocco Baldelli – to a $14+ million deal with an option for another $12 million next season… when he’s 40. Clearly, they knew what they were doing after all.

As a team, the Twins are currently sitting at 199 home runs, and are on pace to obliterate their club record of 225 homers in a season. And seeing as it’s still July, they could very well surpass the Yankees’ 265 home runs from last season. (And so could the Yankees.) And while many had their reservations about signing someone of his age, and with his questionable “cheater” past, there’s zero doubt that Cruz was monumental in leading this team of younger talent into exceeding all expectations after an abysmal few years.

So now it’s your turn. What do YOU think is going on with Nelson Cruz and all the bombas?
