Rick Porcello is Pissed, Y’all
Boston pitcher Rick Porcello has been one of the better pitchers on the mound over the last 10 years, and even won the Cy Young Award in 2016. Lately, however, he’s had a rough go of things. 30-year-old Porcello has been struggling to strike people out, his career-high ERA is sitting at 5.74, and his WHIP is 1.463 (while his career average hovers around 1.3).
Before he took the mound on Wednesday, he had this to say about his recent struggles:
“I can’t tell you how frustrating it is, but that’s pitching. There’s always maintenance to be had. There’s always adjustments to make. There’s things you have to stay on top of. If it was easy, you’d see a lot of guys being able to do it year after year. It’s not easy.”
A few hours later, he took the mound and gave up a double and a single in the first, allowing just one run on 18 pitches. Ricky wasn’t happy with his performance, and took it out on some TV screens on his way back into the dugout – smashing them with his fists. I’m surprised he didn’t cut up his pitching hand in the process, so he’s pretty lucky to have gone out and completed a total of 5 2/3 on the evening.. and managed to give up 7 runs on 10 hits in total.
Oh, and it’s not the first time this season Porcello has taken his aggression out on an inanimate object in the dugout. Remember this?
Perhaps it’s time Rick practice a little meditation to get his head back into the game. The Red Sox are going to need him heading into the Wild Card hunt, as they’re just one game behind the Rays for the 2nd spot. Namaste, Rick.. Na. Ma. Ste.
