Breaking: Padres Fire Manager Andy Green

You know things are bad when the powers-that-be don’t wait for the last game to be over to fire a team’s manager.

The Padres just announced that they’ve fired Andy Green just shy of finishing his fourth season as the club’s skipper. San Diego has a record of 274-366 during Green’s tenure:

  • 2016: 68-94, last place in NL West
  • 2017: 71-91, 4th place in NL West
  • 2018: 66-96, last place in NL West
  • 2019: 69-95 as of today, 4th place in NL West

Not even the mammoth off-season signing of Manny Machado and less mammoth signing of Ian Kinsler were enough to beef up their win record this year. Machado has racked up an impressive 30 home runs and 82 RBI, but also has the lowest batting average of his entire career and has ground into more double plays than anyone in the majors. Kinsler has been sitting on the IL with a herniated disc in his neck since August and has only played in 87 games total.

Green will likely land on his feet, as I foresee a few more firings in the coming weeks. There will be plenty of openings for him, likely with the White Sox, Tigers, Orioles, Marlins, Rockies…. the possibilities are endless with the list of teams that were way below .500 this year (and in the last few seasons).
